Room for All

HISTORY

Room for All is a non-profit organization, born form the hopes and dreams, passion and faith, pain and agony of members of the Reformed Church in America. Though most of us have long believed that LGBTQ people should be fully included within the church’s life and ministry, events within the Reformed Church in America galvanized us to speak out.

A “don’t ask, don’t tell” approach will not serve the church in communicating God’s love for all people.

Background

In June 2004 Rev. Dr. Norman Kansfield, then president of New Brunswick Theological Seminary, officiated at the wedding of his daughter Ann to her partner Jennifer Aull. As the event became more widely known, charges were brought against Dr. Kansfield, charges that were adjudicated at the RCA’s annual assembly, the General Synod, in June 2005.

The Trial

In the months leading up to Dr. Kansfield’s trial, Reformed Church in America members, ministers and friends realized the need to stand with him for the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons within the life and ministry of the church. Though, in the end, Norm was found guilty of violating the peace, unity and purity of the church, a period of “don’t ask, don’t tell” in the RCA had ended.

Through these events and others, the need was made clear for a voice of full inclusion, that a “don’t ask, don’t tell” approach will not ultimately serve the church in communicating God’s love for all people. A small group continued to meet over the summer of 2005 to discern how best to move forward. In the fall, a non-profit was incorporated in the state of New York under the name Room for All, to support, educate, and advocate for the full inclusion of LGBTQ people in the RCA.

Room for All’s ministry began by engaging like-minded individuals in supportive conversations. As we grew, we initiated regional chapters, cultivated more than a dozen welcoming and affirming churches, established an online presence, garnered financial support from private and corporate donors as well as RCA congregations, and offered information-sharing gatherings at annual General Synod meetings. Room for All reached a new high in 2009 when more than 140 people attended “Making Room for All,” our first national gathering. Lives were changed at that event; each person, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, experienced the fully inclusive love of God and found new vitality for ministry and service.

Built on the response and momentum experienced at that event, the Board focused our efforts on creating our first staff position. That effort came to fruition in September 2010, when Marilyn Paarlberg began her work as Executive Director. Highlights of our efforts since 2010 include an increased public and media presence, visits to congregations, classis and synod meetings throughout the RCA, launching a quarterly electronic newsletter, local training events, a biennial national conference, and the initiation of a growing roster of Room for All churches in the RCA.

Growth & Transitions

The organization continued to grow and in 2010, Cameron Van Kooten Laughead joined the organization in the role of Community Coordinator. Following the retirement of Marilyn in 2019, Cameron was given the role of Executive Director, and with continued growth in our outreach, Mitch Leet joined the staff as Program Coordinator in 2022. In 2025, Cameron made a major career move and left RfA for a position in academia, and in 2026 Mitch Leet was promoted to the position of Executive Director.

A Merger Brings New Growth

Since 2011, Room for All has had a sibling organization called All One Body (A1B) working with a similar mission and vision for the Christian Reformed Church (CRC). In recent years, decisions by the Synod of the CRC regarding the creeds and human sexuality resulted in a large number of progressive clergy and a significant number of congregations leaving that denomination, with most of them joining the RCA. With this increasingly conservative climate in the CRC and with its support base migrating to the RCA it became apparent to the directors of both organizations that a merger was in everyone’s best interest. That merger will be completed in 2026, and All One Body will cease to exist as a separate organization. However, all of the work they have done and the resources they created will not be lost. As we consolidate the two organizations, all the A1B digital resources will move to this site and become accessible from links here. Two founding members of A1B have joined the RfA board of directors and we expect others with a CRC heritage to join us as we continue to support the queer individuals and progressive allies who remain in the CRC.

With expanded leadership and renewed energy, Room for All is looking forward to a bright future as we continue to pursue our mission and vision.
